Black Sheep Brewery Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale

Being that its namesake is one of the greatest movies of all time, I was hoping that this beer would live up to my expectations. Unfortunately, this was not the case...

Black Sheep Brewery's Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale is nothing short of a failed gimmick. The idea was great, and the description, "tempered over burning witches" may be funny, but the brew just couldn't live up to the hype. In reality, Black Sheep was commissioned to make this beer for the 30th anniversary of the Pythons - in my opinion they should have picked Fullers!

The problem with this beer is in the addition of fruity hops...they add a distinct dry taste to the brew that is not unlike a homemade wine I have tasted. The beer itself is a golden yellow hue with a very thin white head. It smells like a Belgian tripel, but the taste is very fruity and bitter - a combination I didn't enjoy. The beer was bubbly, and tasted a bit similar to Dogfish's Midas Touch with the muscat grapes and saffron. The only good part of this beer was the small amount of bready malt in the finish. Was really hoping for more with this one!
