"New Beer's Resolution" & Shipyard Pugsley's Signature Series Smashed Blueberry

I know, I know...The title is a little played out, but I am actually serious about this one.

After nearly 1,100 craft beers I have obviously developed some ideas about what I like and the styles and breweries that I don't much care for...

My goal for 2012 is to go for quality over quantity - not that I pounded beers every night last year, but I did sample just about anything new that I could get my hands on...This year I intend to focus on the finer offerings of the brews that I enjoy!

That will probably lead to lots of big-bottle rarities like this one, Shipyard Pugsley's Signature Series Smashed Blueberry, a 9% ABV hybrid beer that is a cross between a porter and a Scotch ale. Brewed with roasted barley, chocolate malt and real fruit I hope this brew is better than their Smashed Pumpkin I tried a little while ago!

The beer pours black with a one-finger head of tan foam, and smells of blueberries and toffee. The first sip is creamy, with lightly bitter coffee, sweet fruit and an almost minty-flavored hop finish. In truth it is a good, very unique beer!

Unfortunately, this beer was sampled during Tuesday night's Allstate Sugar Bowl in which my Virginia Tech Hokies were ROBBED, and thus will always be associated with a bad taste in my mouth...
