Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA 2012

...Speaking of Sierra Nevada's recent expansion announcement, (if you read my last post...) this means that fine, handcrafted brews like this one will be offered even fresher - and more readily available - for my consumption and enjoyment!

The brewers at SN consistently offer big, delicious, hoppy monsters like their Celebration Ale, Torpedo Extra IPA, and Bigfoot Barleywine; but it is their random seasonals that really impress me. I have yet to find a brew from these guys in Chico, CA that I didn't like - pretty amazing for such a huge capacity brewery with several different styles...When I am willing to get a 12-pack of ANY ONE of your offerings then you have really got something special.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA 2012 is a 6.6% ABV, clear copper-colored ale with a large, three-finger head of rocky, nearly white lace. A vigorous pour releases the pungent, funky aroma of patchouli oil and spicy hops.

I am quickly becoming a huge fan of rye-based beers (and whisky for that matter!) due to the peppery spiciness that it adds to flavor profiles. Of course, Sierra Nevada is going to combine that with additional spice and citrus flavors from their use of whole-cone hops, and that makes this an excellent brew - perfect for the crazy Spring-like weather we have had as of late.

Lemony tang, hop bitterness and bready, spicy flavors from the rye - This beer is made with love!
